Silicon Peninsula #020 — AI-memory earnings need three clocks: results, product mix and procurement

Friday, October 30, 2026 · For semiconductor analysts and supplier planning teams · Sources reviewed October 30

The judgement — update the evidence, then the model

Our judgement: the scheduled company disclosure has arrived, so the research task should move from anticipating an event to reconciling its evidence. Keep reported earnings, future product expectations and capacity agreements in separate fields. A strong result can justify more focused supplier diligence without proving that a particular supplier has an order. This brief proposes a workflow for that diligence; it does not establish a customer relationship or recommend a security.

SK hynix's October 28 release reports preliminary consolidated revenue of ₩104.6155 trillion and operating profit of ₩83.3338 trillion. The release states that independent review is unfinished and figures may change. These are issuer-reported results, not independently verified findings by Silicon Peninsula. Official release.

Samsung's October 29 release adds a fresh comparison: its DS division reports quarterly revenue of ₩147.1 trillion and operating profit of ₩106.5 trillion. These are division figures, not a memory-only profit breakdown or a directly comparable company boundary. Samsung describes multi-year customer contracts as a plan; SK hynix describes signed capacity coverage. Do not merge their wording into one order book. Samsung results.

The decision sheet

Evidence stage Boundary Next action
A preliminary quarterly result is available. Reported profit is not collected cash. Reconcile the period, units and later reviewed statements.
A future product mix is described. An expectation is not an achieved mix. Track the subsequent product-level disclosure.
Capacity agreements are described. Capacity coverage is not a supplier purchase order. Request the delivery, pricing and procurement evidence needed for the task.

Signal 1 — the reporting event is now an evidence checkpoint

Why it matters: In issue 018, we kept national export activity separate from company accounts. The arrival of an earnings release changes the available evidence, not the meaning of the earlier trade series. Do not retrofit a partial export window into a quarterly company result. Start a reconciliation note showing what the company actually reports and which assumptions remain yours.

Our suggested worksheet has a source date, reporting period, unit, accounting status and unanswered question beside each figure. If a later reviewed statement changes the result, preserve the original observation and add the revision. That makes the history inspectable. Avoid silently replacing a preliminary number and making an earlier forecast look more precise than it was.

Signal 2 — product expectations need a separate clock

The company expects HBM4 to exceed HBM3E in shipment volume and revenue in the fourth quarter. We treat that as a forward-looking statement, separate from the reported quarter. Product outlook.

Why it matters: A supplier planning team should translate the statement into a technical question before translating it into a sales target. Which component, manufacturing step or qualification requirement would change for that team? Who can confirm the applicable specification? A broad product transition can matter while leaving the timing and size of any individual purchasing opportunity unresolved.

Use a trigger that can be checked: an evaluation request, a dated specification, a qualification outcome or a disclosed order. Record which stage the evidence establishes. Our proposed questions are not a claim that those documents already exist for the reader, and a missing public document does not prove private negotiations are absent.

Signal 3 — capacity coverage is not booked revenue

The release says long-term agreements cover more than 50% of total production capacity for 2027 and 2028. That is a company statement about capacity coverage. Agreement disclosure.

Why it matters: For research, keep contracted capacity, realized shipments, pricing, revenue recognition and cash collection as distinct questions. For supplier development, also distinguish the memory producer’s customer agreement from the producer’s own equipment or materials procurement. These are different contractual relationships. The first may improve a monitoring thesis without resolving the second.

Korea-only radar and the next review

The official source is already in English, so this brief claims no exclusivity or measured reporting lead. On November 4, our own follow-up will compare available review documents, product disclosures and the unresolved questions above. That date is our editorial checkpoint, not a company commitment. Evidence of a revision, a product milestone or a specific procurement document could change the assessment. Until then, preserve the distinction between a reported result and a future operating assumption.

Today’s number and the next seven days

Today’s watch number is more than 50%, the signed capacity coverage cited above; it is not cash already collected. Our editorial checks are November 2 for the NAVER CXL proof of concept, November 3 for CXMT and FADU product evidence, and November 4 for this earnings reconciliation. These are our review dates, not issuer events. Compared with issue 019, actual reported results now replace the earlier calendar invitation; supplier-specific procurement remains a separate evidence gap.
